gorgeous family session | kohimarama baby photographer

Yesterday I had the privilege of photographing a lovely family for the second time.  Last year, I photographed them with their first child, their little daughter, who was 9 months old at the time.  I was absolutely thrilled when they contacted me recently to tell me that they have since had a baby boy and that they would like another session for their newly expanded family of four.

We had such a fun, relaxed session at their home in Kohimarama.  I enjoyed seeing them again, seeing how their beautiful daughter has grown and meeting their bouncing baby boy.  I have so many beautiful photos from this session and can’t wait to be able to share more.  In the meantime, here is a little preview…..

mother and child photo session | auckland lifestyle photography

As a mother myself, one of my favourite subjects to photograph is a mother with her child/ren.

Nigel Latta recently posted this on his Facebook page and it rang very true for me (and made me shed a few tears….):

“What’s the hardest thing about being a parent?

It isn’t the sleepless nights, or the endless fights. It isn’t the constant worrying about every last little thing, or the constant pestering about every last little thing. It isn’t the impact on your work life, your love life, or your social life. It isn’t the lack of money, the lack of time, or even the lack of anything approaching a life of your own.

It feels like it’s all of those things, but it it’s none of them.

In the end, the hardest thing about being a parent is truly understanding that everything comes with a number. You get a certain number of bedtime stories, and a certain number of bedtime kisses. You get a certain number of roads they’ll cross holding your hand, and a certain number of sports matches on a Saturday morning. You get a certain number of bike rides, and a certain number of bad jokes with no real punchline. Most of all… you get a certain number of hours.

One day you’ll go to the bucket, and it will be empty.

So–and I’m saying this as much to myself as to anyone else–get as much as you can, of all that you can, for as long as you possibly can. It’s the only score you’ll get that will ever truly mean anything, and it’s also the hardest one to keep track of.

Good luck.”

And that is why I believe it is so important to record these precious, fleeting moments of childhood and parenthood now – not tomorrow!  Even though some days it may feel like this time will last forever, it really won’t.

One day, this lovely mum will be even more grateful than she is now to have such a beautiful record of her daughter as a young child and their special mother-daughter bond.

Shopping! Best Places to Buy Children’s & Baby Clothes in New Zealand

People often ask me what are my favourite shops selling cute, classic, stylish children’s and baby clothing.  Before each session, I give my clients guidance on the type of clothing that looks good in photos – clothing is a really important factor in the resulting look of your photos.

So, I thought it might be helpful to outline my favourite stores for baby and children’s gear.

First off though, a couple of disclaimers:

~ I have a very stylish mother-in-law who loves to shop and my children are beneficiaries of this – so much so that I don’t need to buy many clothes for my children.

~ I am not much of a shopper – I prefer to spend my precious free time otherwise and the idea of shopping with children in tow is not my idea of fun!

~ Ironic as it is given the fact I have 4 children, I am a wannabe minimalist.  I like to have small wardrobes with limited numbers of clothes – I am a “quality over quantity” kind of girl.

~ I shop online if possible and avoid going into malls.  Malls make me feel queasy as a general rule.  The only exception to this, is my local store “Hatch” in Eastridge Mall, Kepa Road, Mission Bay.  I love this shop to bits and visit quite often to sniff the baby merino and organic cotton.

Now that I have that out of the way…..

Happy shopping!

And, since no post is complete without a photo – here is beautiful baby boy wearing Country Road onesie – purchased by myself in a real shop.

New Family of 4 – Mission Bay Newborn Baby Photographer

A few months ago, some dear repeat clients welcomed their precious 2nd daughter.  I was thrilled to have the privilege of photographing them as a new family of 4.  My previous session for them was a fun lifestyle session for their 3 year old daughter – it was wonderful to see them again to document their joy at this new stage in their life.

This session reflects my approach to newborn sessions – I photograph newborns in a simple, natural, organic style to reflect the pure beauty of the newborn.  My newborn sessions are a celebration not only of the beautiful new baby, but also of the family unit as a whole. Being able to document the family’s love for each other is, for me, one of the most fulfilling aspects of being a photographer.

We had such a fun and relaxed session.  There were lots of giggles and cuddles during the family photos.  Once big sister and dad had finished their moment in the spotlight they went out for a post-photo treat.  At that point, I moved on to photos of baby on her own and I am pretty sure that mum managed to have a little snooze in the peace of my Mission Bay studio.

I look forward to seeing these sweet girls grow up together.

Here are some of the gorgeous photos from our session.

three cute kids | mission bay child photographer

Every day, I feel grateful for my dear neighbour Cate.  18 months ago, she knocked on my door to introduce herself, and we soon became great friends.

Cate is one of those rare people who goes out of her way to help others at every opportunity – she always has a smile on her face and she has been such a help to me with car pooling and babysitting swaps.  Nothing is ever too much trouble.  We have spent many hours laughing together with a glass of wine in hand while our children had crazy good fun in whichever house we happened to be in at the time. Our children are inseparable and my girls often tell me that they are “like part of our family”.

Cate’s birthday was approaching a few weeks ago and I racked my brain for what I could do for her.  I decided that as a Mission Bay child photographer, there could be no better gift that I could give Cate than photographs of her children.  I devised a plan to offer to babysit her kids while her husband took her out for a birthday brunch.  While I was babysitting, I did a short and simple photo session of Cate’s three lovely children and later presented her with the images as her birthday gift.

Here are a few photos from our sweet and simple session.
